Ben Affleck As Batman & Work Of A Social Marketing Coach

By Robert Sutter

If there's been one trending topic amongst comic book fans these days, it has to be the one regarding the casting choice of Ben Affleck as Batman. To say that this has stirred quite a bit of controversy is an understatement. Many fans have come out of the woodworks in order to spout off their concerns as well as their grievances on the matter. This is a tremendous topic nowadays but I think a social marketing coach understands just how tremendous the subject at hand truly is.

It was said that a petition had been made and it said, in no uncertain terms, that Affleck should not play the role of Batman. It was one that earned so much attention that nearly 70,000 signatures were made and it was clear that Affleck was given no faith as far as this dynamic role was concerned. That being said, should this become a topic in which more discussion should be made? Affleck's current case is very reminiscent of one that was made a few decades earlier.

Michael Keaton is, in my mind, a capable actor who played Batman in the past but did fans immediately gravitate towards him? Judging by how they petitioned to have him kicked off the Tim Burton movie projects, it's clear that they did not see Bruce Wayne in Keaton. After films like "Mr. Mom" which were more child-friendly, it was shocking to many that he was able to transition his performance into something more fitting as Batman. The concerns of fans were proven wrong as a result.

I believe this to be the case, especially when you think about just how quick initial reactions can be. Sometimes you are not able to make the best assessment ten minutes after hearing the news, which is what many people did, myself included. Any social marketing coach can tell you that the majority of these reactions were made instantaneously; they were not able to develop for there to be better verdicts on the matter. It's worth letting news digest, as authorities like S-M-M-C can tell you.

The question remains: can Ben Affleck effectively portray Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel? It's hard to say but to make an assumption right off of the bat and stick with it may not be the best choice on the matter. Yes, I understand that the role of Batman holds great importance but one has to believe that Affleck would not be chosen unless it was determined that he was suitable for the role. In 2015, I suppose fans will have to see how strong Affleck's performance is.
