Why You Might Need A Reverse Phone Number Lookup For Free

By Jayne Rutledge

There are many reasons why someone might want to look up someone else's telephone number. When you know the name of the person but do not have their seven digits, this process is fairly simple. However, it is harder when you have the information switched; someone has been calling you, and you have no idea who it is. In this case, you will probably want to use a reverse phone number lookup for free.

These websites will give useful information such as the city or town from which the caller is calling, and sometimes they will tell you whether it is an individual or a business. You may have to pay a fee for the actual name, however.

The good news is, even when you cannot get further information from the service, sometimes there are other options. The website may include a message board where people can post information about the number in question. If that is not the case, try looking further. Someone may have posted this information somewhere else.

This information is necessary in many different scenarios. Here are a few possibilities:

1. Calls from debt collectors. If you have ever been pursued by a debt collector, you know how relentless they are with the phone calls. Often, it is not the original creditor calling you, but a scavenger debt collector that has bought the debt from the originator. They want to catch you off guard, because if you answer and acknowledge that you own the debt, the statute of limitations resets, allowing the debt collectors to pursue you for a longer period of time.

2. The shady locksmith. This is a weird thing, but more common than you might think. Some "locksmiths" (who often do not have a physical location established for their business, so they are almost untraceable) will advertise emergency services. They take advantage of the blurry thinking that results from stress in these situations. They pick your locks, or just break them, and then claim that you own them five times the going rate for this service. If you refuse to pay the exorbitant amount, they may call and hound you for days.

3. An ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend. Some people save these contacts in order to avoid this situation, but others delete them. You ex might call without leaving a message. You think you recognize their number, but you aren't sure. You want to know, so that you can either prepare for the conversation, or avoid the calls completely. Imagine how awkward it could be if you answered without knowing who it was, and got flustered.

These are a few of the scenarios in which a reverse phone number lookup for free might be helpful. When you know who the caller is, you are much more in control of the situation. Be aware, and remember that harassment is a crime, whether on the telephone or in person.
